A key characteristic of Traditional dentures is that they are not permanently affixed to the gum, but are instead held in place in the mouth solely through passive retention. In essence, impressions for traditional dentures are taken of the mouth and dentures are customized precisely to the gum beneath. Consequently, users of traditional dentures rely on adhesives to keep dentures fixed in place during the day. Adhesives become even more important to steadying and affixing mandibular (lower) dentures as the lower mouth bone and gum are relatively weaker than the bone and gum in the top of the jaw. As a result, lower dentures are vulnerable to moving around, whereas upper dentures tend to be steadier.
