When are tooth extractions needed?
Common situations that create the need for dental extractions are:
- The tooth has decayed deep into the tooth structure, even affecting the roots causing extreme oral pain and discomfort.
- An infection in the oral cavity has affected a substantial portion of the tooth and its supporting bone.
- Naturally-occurring excess teeth can cause serious over-crowding of teeth that becomes problematic in adulthood, including misaligned bite and function issues.
What happens during a tooth extraction?
The average tooth extraction procedure is generally easy and quick, with minimal pain. The process begins when our DDG doctor provides you with a localized anesthetic, followed by the use of specialized dental equipment to loosen and gently remove the tooth. However, you may request more stringent sedation techniques in cases where extractions become more difficult and timelier when teeth are impacted.
What happens post-extraction?
Our DDG team will fully and clearly explain how to care for your, take care of yourself after an extraction to alleviate pain and swelling, and to reduce the chances of complications. We will instruct you on how to cleanse your mouth without irritating the affected area and gums, and to avoid the use of tobacco for at least two or more days post-extraction. We will also remind you to avoid drinking using straws and to consume soft foods to reduce strenuous chewing. We will provide you with a list of instructions to help you prevent the painful experience of dry socket. Dry socket occurs when a blood clot that forms in the open socket where the extracted tooth was located, is dislodged and leaves the bone exposed. We are here for you in case this happens, call us immediately and we can help alleviate your pain.
